A comprehensive dental exam takes time, usually 1–11/2 hours. It begins with a review of your past medical and dental history and an up to date review of your present general health. These histories are important factors in mapping out your risk and tolerance and help alert your dentist to possible impediments to treatment goals. For instance anxiety levels which are high may suggest a slower approach to treatment, the need for special anxiety reducing medication at night for a peaceful sleep and on the day of the appointment.
In most cases, x-rays are used to detect dental decay and gum disease and form an important part of the examination process. Today digital is the most efficient, environmentally friendly, and least radiation exposure method of x-ray exam. Your dentist may need a large format Panorex and smaller x-rays to be sure all is well before mapping out a comprehensive treatment plan.
A thorough examination of the mouth is essential to rule out the presence of disease. It should include an examination for oral cancer, periodontal (gum) disease and decay. If all is well the examination may end here – but if there are special needs and concerns of your dentist or yourself additional diagnostics are usually required. If needed an examination of the temporamandibular joints may follow and many times, study models and up to ten photos are taken to help in the development of your dental treatment plan.
As you can see the dental exam is not a 5 minute survey of your teeth. It is a comprehensive assessment of your oral health based on different diagnostics. Its aim is to uncover and prevent dental disease before major problems occur.
